What business model was accidentally created when a telegraph operator misrouted a message to 50 stockbrokers in 1870?

  1. Mass email marketing
  2. The modern advertising agency
  3. The stock ticker service
  4. The wire transfer network

Answer: The modern advertising agency — The mistake led to the first-ever "media buy" — purchasing message space in bulk to resell to multiple clients.

In 1870, a Philadelphia telegraph operator named Volney Palmer made an expensive mistake: he sent a single client's stock tip to fifty brokers instead of one. Facing a massive telegraph bill he couldn't pay, Palmer had a desperate idea — he'd bill all fifty recipients a fraction of the cost and pocket the difference.

The brokers loved it. They were already paying for individual telegrams; getting curated information at a discount was a bargain. Palmer suddenly realized he was sitting on something bigger than a billing workaround. He could buy telegraph capacity in bulk, aggregate clients who wanted to reach the same audience, and charge everyone less while keeping a commission.

Within months, Palmer opened the first business explicitly organized around this model: buying media space wholesale and reselling it to multiple advertisers. He called himself an "agent" for newspapers and telegraph services. The advertising agency — as a distinct business entity separate from both媒体 and advertiser — was born from a routing error.

By 1890, the model Palmer stumbled into had spawned an entire industry. Agencies negotiated rates, placed ads, and took their cut. Today's $200 billion advertising agency business — from Ogilvy to Droga5 — traces directly back to one operator's fat-finger mistake and the hustler who turned his bill into a business model.

Word of the Day

jobbing noun · JOB-ing

The practice of buying and selling goods or services as a middleman for profit, especially in small-scale or opportunistic transactions; also, doing small occasional jobs rather than regular work.

After the telegraph mistake made him money, Palmer realized jobbing message space could beat working for wages.

Joke of the Day

Why did the telegraph operator start an advertising agency?

He figured if he was going to make mistakes, he might as well charge fifty people for them.
